The French take la pause seriously — lunch away from your desk, a break between classes or meetings. It’s what I mean when I talk about France being an anti-optimization culture. Instead of hustling from one deliverable to the next, there are built-in breaks throughout the day. La pause is a moment to catch your breath (or smoke a cigarette, as many French still do.)
Today, I’m embracing my French and taking une petite pause. This week’s essay isn’t ready. I’m taking my own advice to slow down instead of banging it out simply to feed the algorithm and publish at my usual Saturday morning time.
So instead of plowing ahead, here are a few pieces I’ve most enjoyed writing over the years. I hope one of them delights you in a moment of pause of your own.

“Paris is more than a place. It is a feeling. It is a state of existing. Paris invites us to simply be. What a gift, n’est pas? It is enough to simply be in Paris.”
