Interruption
One of my primary goals in 2024 was to consistently deliver a Finance That Feels issue on the first of each month. The past few days made this achievement difficult. In the span of four days we have hunkered down for Hurricane Helene, trying to work and keep up normalcy while school cancellations and the closure of everything completely disrupted routines—including the time I had previously set aside to finalize the October issue. Then, on Sunday, 24 miles east of Atlanta a massive chemical fire erupted, blasting fumes and chemicals into the air. Today we have been instructed not to go outside, and many are experiencing slight burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat and headaches.
It has not felt normal, it is not normal, and it has been too hard to pretend everything is normal. I have not been able to sit down, focus, and finish editing the issue—impossible to do when I am acutely concerned about my family’s wellbeing.
We are the lucky ones. The worst of the hurricane evaded us. With the chemical blast, public officials say that the levels of chemicals in the air where we live will not be harmful. We have a home where we can shelter in place in comfort and with quality filtration in our air systems. We are lucky.
The October issue of Finance That Feels, on the simple but mischievous topic of defining money, is written. However, with the chaos of the past few days I decided to be patient with this one even if it means a delayed publish. In the next few days I will finish editing the issue and then send it out.
In the meantime, there are a lot of people who need help. If you are able to assist financially, here are a few good organizations directly helping impacted families from Hurricane Helene:
Cajun Navy - Hurricane Helene Response
Caring For Others, Inc. - Hurricane Helene relief in Georgia
North Carolina Community Foundation
Operation Airdrop - Hurricane Helene
Samaritan’s Purse Hurricane Helene Response
United Way of the CSRA - Hurricane Helene Relief for Augusta and surrounding area
